a haircut.

The first time someone spoke the words “Nope, I got them all cut” in response to the question “Hey, did you get a hair cut?” I bet it was downright hilarious. The way that answer just cuts right through the communicatory haziness that we’ve all overlooked for so long—a haircut, a hair cut—it’s genius! And what a surprise it is the first time a person encounters that clever retort. Bam! That’s what it’s like—a sucker punch of specificity to counter an innocuously imparted piece of lingo. And, if you ask me, there’s nothing quite as awesome as an excessively literal response to an only moderately literal question.

Except maybe an excessively literal response to an excessively literal response. Allow me to illustrate:

“Hey, did you get a haircut?”
"No. I got them all cut.”
“Gross. That is way more information than I wanted.”

See. That’s much more awesome.

I don't need a haircut right now but I do need a nail trim.

I hate that retort. The first one. Not the second one. The second one I can stomach.
